About Wiana

Wiana, titled after a word signifying 'The Mother', is a profound exploration of nature's maternal role, vibrantly echoing our intrinsic connections to our roots. This masterful composition commands a dual sense of tenderness and robustness, mirroring the dualism of motherhood itself.

Wiana symbolises the Earth, subtly alluding to its role as a universal mother, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all life forms. She is our foundation, grounding us in the present, reminding us of our past and shaping our future. Her embrace is represented in the intertwining roots that sprawl across the canvas, and the inextricable connection we all hold to our ancestry and heritage.

I was inspired to create Wiana (meaning 'Mother', from the Aboriginal languages in the geographic area which is now Sydney, Australia) from my experiences with its beautiful people, and my wonder at its history, nature, and wildlife.

Every person carries a second self, the one who says the thing out loud, who does not shrink, who is not managing anyone else's comfort. Most of us keep that self folded away. The figures in this collection are those selves let out. They are not portraits of people the artist has met. They are what a trait looks like when it stops apologising: strength without permission, loyalty without noise, tenderness that refuses to be mistaken for weakness.

She paints them at full volume, pattern layered on pattern until the background stops behaving and starts answering them. That is where the collection takes its name. Reality does not disappear, it is eclipsed, pushed briefly behind something larger. She hopes whoever lives with one of these works recognises a little of their own hidden self in it, and treats that self more generously.
